The Dentist

1996 Directed by Brian Yuzna

Horror Marathon Day 26 Film 41

A Dentist goes haywire after finding his wife fucking the greasy pool man. Oddly he has one of 007's guns on hand and goes to kill them both, but is stopped by a dog that he kills. Bitten and going crazy the dentist decides to take his appointments-- having increasingly harsh scenes of teeth being pulled or mouths and tongues gouged out. The comedic element is pretty lost here though- with random softcore nude scenes and the dentist being played very sternly rather than insanely.

There's no maniacal laughter- just obsessiveness. The gun doesn't exactly fit into the character either as it lacks any of the weird menace of being in a dental chair. Perhaps there are some moments of garbage cheeze here, but I'd rather watch even more splatterfied gore humor. It could have also used some more narrative tension around how they handled the fear of being in that setting too. Mark Ruffalo also gets a small part as a sleazy talent agent.
